The Music of DNA

Susan Alexjander

Sequencia is a CD of original compositions scored for synthesizer, violin, cello, voice and tabla.  It uses a tuning system derived from frequencies of the four bases of DNA:  adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine.

Partner David Deamer, cell biologist, supplied the frequencies from his laboratory at UCSC, CA.  The tunings are hauntingly beautiful, but Sequencia is not in any way 'demonstration' music.  It is meant to be enjoyed without knowing anything about the process.

"Sequencia is the Grail Quest set to music.  There is beauty and power in it; great power."   -Larry Dossey, M.D.

"Feelings arise I have never felt before, yet which feel somehow strangely familiar, as though I knew them once long ago, high ago, deep ago. "  -C.Y.

About the composer...

Susan Alexjander holds a master's degree from San Jose State University in Composition and Theory.  She has taught at the university level and is currently an adjunct faculty member of Union Institute in Sacramento, CA. Her compositions have been performed throughout the United States, including collaborations with dance companies.  Sequencia is internationally known and has appeared on CNN, BBC Radio, Wisconsin Public Radio, and featured at the Boston Museum of Science, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Museum of Santa Barbara.  She is Director of Science & The Arts, Aptos, CA and continues work on a second recording involving the geometry and sounds of pulsars, elements, and the crystalline world.

Susan's Philosophy

"My music is nature-based.  I follow the advice of Thomas Carlyle who said: 'See deep enough, and you see musically:  the heart of Nature being everywhere music, if you can only reach it.'

I write music for the joy and excitement of discovery, and to hear different sounds and patterns normally hidden to our ears.  My only connection to the healing arts is that of a musician....but that is perhaps the oldest medicine on the planet.  I make no claims about the healing properties of this music except to say that for many it has profound effects, I suspect through the magic of resonance.  People are listening to the beauty of themselves.  What could be more healing than  that?"
